WBC uniform watch

I’m sure many people noticed this, but some WBC uniforms are alarmingly similar to MLB uniforms. Guess that’s template at work (and lack of creative colour schemes due to flag colours, though not every nation adheres to their flag stripes). Anyways, without further ado, here they are:
It was difficult to tell them apart on quick glance, especially since they played in the same pool in Mexico City.
Different font, obviously, but pretty similar otherwise.
Canada has the faux vest thing going.
Reverse the font colouring, and you’re basically there.
Future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez pitching for his homeland, earning a job with the Mets in the process.
There’s that annoying underarm panel in many WBC jerseys, and the helmet bill’s different colour, but otherwise…
(Immortal Manny at work)
Obviously. Was this done because of the Piazza-Lasorda connection from the first WBC?
Netherlands (the Cinderella!)
Cap colours need to be reversed, and MLB teams seem to be fond of cursive fonts while WBC unis tend to use block fonts.
Now for the more far fetched connections after this jump
SK Wyverns (KBO)
Yeah I know, cap colour. Maybe there’s something closer out there, but the piping and red’s there.
Aroldis Chapman reminded me of young Randy Johnson, the tall lanky lefty with nasty stuff but poor control.
Kintetsu Buffaloes (NPB 80’s~90’s)
Hmm… maybe? Anyways, that’s a young Hideo Nomo there.
Cuba (away) – red, red, red!
They were even redder at the 2008 Beijing Olympics
Shidax (Japanese industrial leagues) – used to be coached by living legend Katsuya Nomura
In fact, Shidax was the first Japanese team to hire Cubans in Antonio Pacheco and Orestes Kindelan. Pacheco ended up managing against Japan in the 2009 WBC. I’m sure the Cuban imports felt right at home in those unis 😛
Atlanta Braves (BP jersey?)
Glass hero Chipper Jones
OK, the colour combination for Japan’s not so original, but the design is.
Seibu Lions (NPB pre-2009)
OK, the Lions lack red, so it’s more of the blue thing, and it’s fun to throw up a pre-buff Kazuhiro Kiyohara pic up here.
OK, I concede, these look pretty original.. though not particularly appealing.
(This one’s from the Olympics, Taiwan meekly bowed out of the 2009 WBC and didn’t have a chance to wear their home duds.)
Meh, bland. Neither Taiwan nor USA jerseys grab you or make you do a double take. Though maybe the former would be better if they could make them real “Taiwan” jerseys instead of “Chinese Taipei”.
So, how ’bout…
Aston Villa (English Premiership!)
