    The Cranes lone import

Posted by japanstats on 2009 August 14日 Friday

The Nippon Paper Cranes will attempt to defend their Asia League title with only one import player, as the team has signed defenceman Pierre-Olivier Beaulieu as their lone import for the upcoming 2009-10 campaign.

    Beaulieu

Beaulieu is a big defenceman at 195cm 97kg and had success in the ECHL and the 2nd division of German Bundesliga. But the production of Brad Tiley (D, 36GP 25P) and Kelly Fairchild (F, 20GP 23P), who were both NHL veterans, will be missed (though the team is stacked with great Asia Leaguers including Japanese-Canadians). Will the younger (and supposedly cheaper) Beaulieu be productive enough for the Cranes to defend their title, or will going cheap and young on their import cost the Cranes the title again? (In the 2007-08 season, the Cranes replaced their ineffective cheap imports with NHL vets Jamie McLennan and Tyson Nash midseason.)

    モントリオールGP復活!

Posted by japanstats on 2009 August 5日 Wednesday

    2010年のF1カレンダーにモントリオールGPが戻ってきます!2016年までの契約を今バーニーとすり合わせているそうです。ついでにインドGPと韓国GPの追加も狙っているそうです。

Bernie Ecclestone, the head of Formula One, said on Tuesday that an agreement in principle has been reached to have F1 return to Montreal in 2010.

“We have an in-principal agreement of how we’re going to make the race happen,” he told CBC Radio.

He wouldn’t disclose many details of the agreement, but said the potential deal will keep F1 in Montreal for at least the next seven years. He added that a formal agreement has to be reached in the next few weeks in order to make the deadline for the 2010 calendar.

Free Blades sign two players and open camp

Posted by japanstats on 2009 August 4日 Tuesday

The Tohoku Free Blades have finally officially signed new players to bring their player count up to 16 (still far short of the minimum 23 player roster for the Asia League).

Starting goalie will be ex-Ice Buck Michio Hashimoto, the 32 year old veteran will keep the new team respectable, and he is a product of the local Hachinohe hockey scene. Hashimoto appeared in 32 games for the Bucks last season and posted an 89.7% save percentage.

Blades have also signed Yoshikazu Kashino from the defunct Seibu Prince Rabbits. Kashino played in 20 games and recorded no points last season.

The team has opened camp in Hachinohe, Aomori on 3 August.

    Free Blades update

Posted by japanstats on 2009 August 2日 Sunday

Still no word on additional players on the meagre 14 man roster that’s supposed to be expanded to 23 players by 19 September when the 2009-10 Asia League season opens. (28 July, Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper)

The Blades have also acquired Chris Wakabayashi the former manager of Seibu Prince Rabbits as its Head Coach to assist Manager Keisuke Araki.

    アイスホッケーのアジア・リーグに新たに来季から加わる東北フリーブレイズは27日、3月限りで解散した西武の監督だった若林クリス氏がヘッドコーチに就任すると発表した。荒城啓介監督を補佐する。

There are rumours that the Blades will be able to sign more than 2 imports that other Japanese clubs are limited to. Also, rumour has it that now free agent former Ice Bucks starting goalie Michio Hashimoto is going to join the Blades, as he got pushed out of the Bucks by national team goalie Kikuchi, and Hashimoto is from the Tohoku area where the Blades call home.

And finally, there are supposed to be 2 preseason matches against the HC Tochigi Ice Bucks (team renamed from the city of Nikko to the prefecture of Tochigi) on 29 (Sat) and 30 (Sun) of August at 14:00 (location unknown).

Robot Baseball Players Can Pitch and Bat

Posted by japanstats on 2009 August 2日 Sunday

Out of Japan, there’s a baseball player who has an edge like no other: a fastball-pitching, homer-hitting robot.

The pitching robot fires into the strike zone 90% of the time. It currently throws a plastic foam ball at 25 miles per hour, with hopes to later improve its speed to 93 mph. The team that designed the robot are planning to move the bot’s range of motion beyond fastballs into curveballs and spitballs.

The batting robot hits pitches in the strike zone almost 100% of the time, and does not swing at pitches outside the strike zone. The robots resemble cars with arms rather than human forms.

“The demand level of the robotics technology of each robot is very high,” University of Tokyo professor Masatoshi Ishikawa said. “What was difficult was to create a mechanism to satisfy such a high level of demand.”
